Hi all. I seem to have a whine that changes with revs but is constant, maybe it's the engine/timing belt tensioners? But I'm wondering if it's the serpentine belt or pulleys or two seperate things. The whine is constant but there also seems to be a 'flutter' type whine at times, sometimes not at all, sometimes very obvious but no idea where it's coming from, engine, trans, diff, belt. But I noticed when looking at the belt and pulleys that at least the tensioner pulley looks old and possibly original and although I can't do it by hand, it seems to move about ever so slightly when running. I looked at the bolt of the idler pulley for instance and it is solid, no movement but if I look at the bolt on the tensioner pulley there is definitely some movement when running. Is this slight movement normal or should it be rock solid like the idler pulley? Feel free to go out to your Tribeca and have a close look at the idler pulley bolt to see if there is slight movement of the fitting when idling haha Thanks!

I would back you up if I had a 3.6. Hopefully someone here knows. I get a weird rattle instead.

Thanks mate. Id be more worried about the timing chain or chain tensioners if it was a 'rattle' but if definitely doesn't sound like that, but I could be wrong
Hah you are scaring me. My JDM engine is young so hopefully not. Whines usually have me thinking failing alternator more than anything.

chain tensioners tend to wore off - yes.
on 3.6 - I changed tensioner and idler pulley bearings - no joy.
removed a/c compressor pulley - no joy. (also some story about finding right belt to fit without a/c compressor).
now - I think - it is bearing/s in alternator... but right now - I don't feel like doing it :D
