Speed Sensor

I have a 2008 Tribeca Limited. I had a wheel bearing go on my and as soon as it did, I got the ER SS error code along with the ABS light and traction control light. I am assuming it is the speed sensor on the same tire that is giving me the issue. Does anyone know if there is something online showing how to change one out? It is winter here in NH and I certainly don't want to be driving around without traction control.

Thanks
Aimee

You should really scan for the correct code before jumping to any conclusions. If it is the speed sensor, it's pretty easy to swap out. Just d/c the battery, follow the sensor wire coming out the hub into the engine compartment, d/c the sensor & remove wire from the clips, unscrew the sensor bolt, pull the sensor out and replace, torque the bolt to 5.5 ft-lb, and c'est fini.
Unlikely the sensor, more likely the new bearing. A number of people report issues with aftermarket bearings and CC. Sometimes as obvious as ER SS, sometimes more subtle, like CC just not staying engaged.

I suggest subaru OEM only for the bearing. Even then, you need to be aware not to use a magnetic screw driver or get a magnet near it or it can mess up the hub.

Anyone have any photos of the speed sensor wire in the engine compartment or is it readily view-able?

I'm going to replace the speed sensor in my brother's 2006 Tribeca this week. He's getting the ERSS error code, VDC/CEL and loss of power; dealer told us it was driver side speed sensor, so I had him buy it online for $50.xx, dealer wanted around $350 to replace it (!)

Or if anyone has any detailed engine photos/diagrams so I can see it beforehand?
just happened to my car yesterday. have to change the bearing because it ate thru the sensor.
its weird how a stupid sensor like that can make the car run like garbage
And, did it fix it?
Yes, issue was resolved after replacing the sensor and has not returned. We also used a scanner to clear the fault codes as well.
i am curious, can i just buy a hub assembly or do i have to press bearings?
Hub assembly. check out parts.subaru.com for part number and to see what it all looks like.
Hi, Found this thread which closest resembles my problem.
A week ago the ABS-OFF and Traction Control lights came on, only when in motion.
By accident, I saw the ER-SS code on the odometer, pressed the trip button and it was gone.
A few questions if someone can answer them:
1. In my manual, under the Combination Meter System, there is a description of a test procedure that is initiated with the Ignition switch and the 'small light' switch.
The manual has no other reference to describe what the 'small light' switch is.
It is probably obvious but I don't get the test to initiate. I would like to see the ER-SS error again.

2. I have been hearing a hum (last 2000 miles) that is proportional to the wheel speed and hoping it is not a differential.
This thread describes that it may be a wheel bearing that has now caused the ABS-OFF and Traction Control lights to come on OR maybe the speed sensor is been eaten.
Is there an easy way to tell which wheel this has happened on?
Can the speed sensor be tested without removal?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to pull the codes from the CEL and ABS system. If you are lucky one of the codes will be wheel specific.

I have no idea wbout the combination meter test section.

Hum is likely wheel bearing since that is the most common failure. However, the ER SS is not usually associated with a failing wheel bearing but rather after replacement with non-OEM bearing that gives the systems fits at times (not always).
I had the same problem. ER-55 is the Speed Sensor(55) and is serviceable. The whole wheel bearing does not have to be replaced. A shop with a code reader can tell which sensor is the problem. I had my left front replaced for about $110 with diagnosis.
I have the same issue.
Anybody knows how to read fault codes from ABS?
If I know which wheel speed sensor I'll replace it myself.
Similar issue here: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums...uto-flashing-sport-light-clunky-shifting.html

from ntak. DIdn't show a code via the dash, but dealer was able to pull one. You need FreeSSM or bring it to the dealer it would seem.

Tom
I went to a shop this morning.
Code is C0027: rear left speed sensor.
Part is about $52.00. Labor about $200...

Before that got the FreeSSM but it could not connect to my Bluetooth ODB reader.
Yeah, you need a specific cable that supports a specific communication speed. generic ODB does not.
