Since this is my first Subaru and still learning about it, I am a little concerned at the number of RPM's it turns first thing in the morning........when I first start it up and it is cold, the engine will race up to 2000 RPM and stay there for about 30 to 40 seconds and then trail off to around 1500 and on down.....is this normal for a cold engine to run that many RPM's when it is cold???? I have always been told that the most damage or harm to an engine is when you first start it up........this seems a bit extreme....

Almost any vehicle will have elevated RPMs when cold. Yes, when you first start the engine, the initial second or two before oil gets fully circulated, may be a little harder on an engine, but after that it's fine.
