RomRaider/ECUFLASH - Tribeca Tuning

Hey Guys,

I've been lurking through the LEGACYGT.com forum and happened to come across this link.

RomRaider ? View topic - Tribeca Tuning - From Start to Finish - Gotchas and Tricks

So I took the plunge and purchased the OPENPORT 2.0 cable, downloaded the RomRaider/ECUFLASH and took the tips from the post.

OMG! This is the best decision I've made so far for the Tribeca! Throttle lag -GONE! My fuel consumption has increased to 22-23MPG and the throttle response is so good it feels like the car is 500lbs lighter. SIMPLY incredible!

Any DIYer should give this a try.

I'd like to do this to my 08 Tribeca, I hate the throttle lag and well, I'd love better gas mileage. My last car was a '98 Forester standard and I could really get up and go. And it got 23 mpg.

I read the thread, but it was over my head. The picture you attached looks like there is plug and play version. Can I do this on my stock Tribeca? Where do I get it?
I am all for getting others involved in DIYing, but Tuning is a whole different game, it is way to easy to screw up and then you will be cursing that cable and software as the tow truck piggybacks your car to the nearest dealer for a $1500 ecu replacement.

If the tuning guide is over your head, then please for the love of your car leave it to the professionals.

From my 2nd hand experience, this place is the best for open source tuning. Xtreme Racing Tuning ? Viciously Tuned, Driven hard

Understand it is still possible you can brick your ecu and be towing it in for that ECU replacement, so follow the instructions to a "T" and get an extension cord for you laptop, and battery charger if you are iffy on that as well.

I purchased the cable from NEWEGG, but had to wait a few weeks for delivery. At $36 I wasn't really complaining.

The RomRaider software is a free download from their website and is used to modify the ROM (Engine Tune).

ECUFLASH is a free download that is used to upload the ROM from your ECU and flash a modified ROM to your ECU.

For simplicity sake, you can upload your ROM. Open the ROM in ROMRAIDER, adjust the DBW settings and flash it back to your ECU without much effort.

It looks like this would not work on my 07 with the 3.0. Is that correct?
And if it doesn't, is there a similar flash for mine?

The ROM for B9 is modified the same way with the tantrix cable and the ROMRAIDER\ECUflash software. There are plenty of threads on ROMRAIDER.com with guys that have made changes to their tune.
Rising Sun-maybe you could make video with entire processes of moding ROM, it would be easier for us.
Did you have to connect green plug under glove box?
The process is very simple. Buy the OPENPORT 2.0 cable.

Connect the module to the OBD2 port and the cable to an open USB port on your laptop.

Detailed instructions are on the link I provided for the tuning. DM me with any additional questions.
@Rising Sun

Have you tried logging directly to SD card in such a way that it can be opened by your tuning/viewing software?

I can get it to log on command but am struggling with the formatting of some fields, especially the time.

(I don’t like driving with my laptop on the seat next to me while logging.)
I'm very happy that others are taking the time to understand the tune on their Tribeca. Since I have make multiple changes to my rom often, I purchased the BTssM app from the Play Store. This app was designed for Subaru logging. Here's a link with more details.

https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/btssm-bluetooth-adapter-app-v-1-closed-229709.html

BTssM can self log all knock events with plenty of detail. I use an old Android phone primarily as a semi permanent display for the logging.
Hey monster,

I started like everyone else on that thread with the safe tune. But everyone will have a different opinion depending on the condition of their car.

IMHO...

The DBW was too aggressive off idle and I re-tweaked my own DBW map cell by cell. My background is more tuning Turbo motors, so I prefer a more linear approach to power delivery. Since my car has a free flowing exhaust, I also tried the "aggressive" tune and found gains throughout the power-band. But I still felt like my motor was being held back, so I've been able to add more timing with impressive gains in the midrange.

If you need any advice tuning your ROM, feel free to PM anytime.

Hey, thanks for the fast answer !!!

Well, I'm a total newbie. I just started reading and trying to understand a little about remapping the ROM while the tactrix openport 2.0 cable I ordered arrives.

There are some issues I thing will interfere in my mapping: Since I live in Brazil, I think I'll have to consider the differences between the gasoline we use here and the one you guys used to tweak yours... is that correct ???

What you thing would be a good starting point: start taking some readings from my car before changing the rom ?? Or just start with the "safe rom" ??? Or maybe with your rom, if it's available for download....

Thanks again !!!

Got my OpenPort 2.0 and noted that just plugging it into the USB on the computer it was not recognized. Sad face here.
Then I went ahead and plugged it into the OBD port. Then its lights came on and it pulsed between reddish and orange.

But it gave an error in EcuFlash. Then it went dead. Now no lights and the computer does not see it.
Got ahold of the company it was purchased from, through Newegg, and am waiting to see what they want me to do.
Any suggestions from the group? I already tried a different cable with no change.
My OpenPort 2.0 arrived yesterday and is working fine. It had to be pushed fairly firmly onto the ODBII port of the Tribeca to work, much firmer than my other 2 ODB11 devices.

When I installed ECUFlash it installed the drivers. I ensure that the device is all connected prior to running ECUFlash and it communicated straight away (after I worked out I have to push the ODBII connector in hard to work)

I have pulled down my factory ECU image and now need to review and compare the settings to decide what to do. (I'm in Australia so need to compare to the US tunes to see what the difference is)

If you send me your tune, I can make suggestions on where gains can be made.
My Tribeca is an Australian Delivered 2011. The ECU image is binary identical to the one posted here RomRaider ? View topic - Request 2012 ADM Tribeca Definition DE5I500M and the definition file created is available here RomRaider ? View topic - DE5I500M 2012 ADM Tribeca Definition ECU 764B344007

I am hesitant on the accuracy of the definition file however as there appears to be things missing and the addresses defined vary from the USDM definitions in ways I wouldn't have expected.

I plan on do comparisons of the ROM between AU and USDM to see if the variations are genuine. Just trying to find a decompiler compatible with the Subaru ECU I can use without spending USD$1000 on IDA

I've been comparing the ROMS and it looks like SUBARU made changes every year (To improve MPG/drive-ability). Looking at 2009 ROMS from AU, EDM and USDM, they all look similar/identical. Viewing 2012 ROMS, I see more aggressive Ignition timing and ACVS tuning (Some I've incorporated into my own tune.)

I *suspect* I could use the USD rom in the Australia car, and thus use the all the good work everyone has been doing to tune these cars. Not sure I have the balls to try it thou as I really don't want to brick the ECU.
Tuning Suggestions Wanted

Got my money back from the fake China-made OpenPort 2. While going round and round with them I already ordered a replacement and expect it to be here next week.
Assuming it works I'm looking for guidance on what to change to get rid of the bogging during warm up light acceleration and improving my overall fuel mileage would be a giant plus.
Any suggestions on what to adjust first?

Thanks guys, I ran across this for searching on our 06 we purchased with a few issues. Ordered a Tactrix cable. Hopefully improve this 13 year old beauty a little with some adjustments.

Are there any files for basic tune on the 06-07 3.0 motor for us? Assuming the 3.6 will be quite different.
