so i'm driving on Saturday and all of a sudden my CD just shut down. i tried to eject it and it displays "Mecha Error". I'm thinking the first part is Error in a different language? anyway now i can't load, eject or play and CD's. Has this happened to anyone yet?

That's bad....if it's dead I wonder how hard it will be to retrieve the cd's. Can you comment on how you used the player? change the cd's a lot? move from disc to disc a lot? etc.

Haven't read about any other failures.

Maybe ask them to put in an 07 head unit....might allow sat radio or ipod connection?

I actually listen more to AM radio(sports talk shows) than anything else. I had bought a new CD a few days before this happened and that was the reason i listening to the CD. I do not change CD's that much...not out of the ordinary anyway. If anything my usage is less then average.

Funny yuou mention the radio being changed to the 07' because i was thinking the same this morning.. if i do i think the only way to get around it would be to pay off the dude at the counter. also the head unit is a seperate unit from the dash piece which has all the funtion buttons and is connected to the head unit by a connector. I presume this would have to be changed as well because the buttons are different on the 07'.

your right about getting the CD's out as well.. if they are unable to get it to work they will definitely have to take the head unit apart to get my 6 CD's out.
no problems w/ mine, probably just a dead unit, should be under warranty.
mine has done that as well. turning the ignition on and off fixed it for me.
yea it is under warranty and i have to take it in tomorrow morning for them to get some code out to order it... apparently they don't try fixing them... i've been trying to bribe the guy in to getting me a 07 unit so i can get my XM and I pod connections installed... lets see how it goes... keep you guys posted.

Also somthing i noticed(which i did not know before) while i was fiddling with it was; if you keep the eject button pressed it shows the eject icon and the word "all" i'm thinking this is a way to unload all CD's without having to press each CD number... find out soon enough if i'm correct on this.

Typically (from experience TWICE on my past Subarus), dealerships just swap units which typically are NEVER in stock. They usually look, say "yeah, we need to replace it", and a week or two later, the new one comes in to the dealership. They then will call you a couple days later to schedule your appointment.

If CDs are stuck inside the changer as I've experienced, they will NOT get them out for you at the dealership. Instead, they send the changer to the manufacturer after they swap it for you, and after several weks, the manufacturer will retrieve the CDs and send them to the dealership. The dealership will then either call you to have you pick them up or will just mail them to you. Each CD comes in a plastic sleeve in a bubble-wrapped envelope.

When this happened to me, I was devistated. One of the CD's in particular I had just gotten the day before and had been awaiting it release for over a year. I suddenly founf myself without it for a long period of time and was especially bummed since I only played through the entire thing once when the player failed. Long story short, be ready for a wait if the CDs are stuck. I sure hope you dumped them onto an Ipod when you first got them (I always do following my expereince).

As for the upgrading to '07 thing, I'd highly recommend it. Please let us know how it goes as i may try the same thing when mine craps out inevitably (I still use it a lot since the '06 has no Ipod inputs that can be used when my kids are using the rear entertainment system).

I had a similar experience to HB_Dad with our OB VDC's McIntosh head unit. They just got us a new head unit. At the time ours was an 02 and in 03 they went to a 6 disk unit unlike our single disk. They would not change to the new head unit :( if you want it under warrentee it has to be a direct swap. I was kind of bummed. Can't hurt to ask but I'm guessing the answer will be no.
The same thing happened on my last Subie. They just swapped me in a new head unit, but had to mail the CD's back to the dealer for me after they got them out.
well i had an accident and the truck was in the shop. they had disconnected the battery and the CD player was working after i got it back from the body shop.

I have this infamous "Mecha error" as well. Have had it for nearly a year
I don't have any warranty on my 06 left. I was figuring to take out the unit and see what I can do myself one day, at least to retrieve the CD's inside... as long as I don't ruin the radio
To get a new unit is probably not worth it...
