I checked with a code reader and got P0117 code which indicates the Engine coolant temperature electrical circuit input signal had low voltage for a predetermined period of time.
The auto parts store said could be the sensor. On the was back from the store, car started to smoke from drivers side engine compartment.
Any thoughts if related?

The driver's side of the engine is where the sensor is located and there are plenty of ways that you could get smoke from that side, especially is there is a leak in the cooling system. The coolant sensor is fairly easy to get to, start with what you know, and dig in a little deeper. Try to figure out if the smoke is coolant burning or something else.
