Hello,

I just join the Subaru family by buying a 2006 Tribeca. Unfortunately only one key and a separate remote came with it. I've been reading past key threads and still a bit confuse about key programming.

- Can I just get a key (perhaps from ebay) and have local locksmith cut this key. Does a dealer need to do anything so I can use this key to manually lock/unlock and start the car?

- From past threads, I can buy an after market remote, and program this remote to lock/unlock the car myself. This is correct right?

Many thanks.

I found the info:

Key: dealer charges $44.95 for blank plus $50 programming fee

Remote: $70 also needs programming, though no programming fee

Local Ace Hardware: $59.99 for blank key and programming

Remote: $20 from ebay, one can program it oneself.

I'm pretty certain our keys are chipped, so you will have to go to a dealer to get the Tribeca ECU programmed to accept the new key.

The key will probably unlock the door fine without programming, but it won't start the vehicle.
