Typically, this code indicates a bad ABS wheel sensor, without telling you which one. A scanner that can read ABS codes would be needed to pinpoint the bad one. On my B9, the dust shield on the LH front axle bulged outward because of rust and its edge cut through the sensor part way. The warning light came on only once, and I didn't know what it was, but eventually found out when replacing the bearing unit.

Do you know of any scanners that do this for Subaru? I bought the blue driver hoping it would but it doesn't.

0) I presume we are talking about 3.6, so called - facelift.
1) kids, we open FSM and read - what is P0500.
P0500
Vehicle Speed Sensor “A”
2) we keep on reading FSM:
<Ref. to EN(H6DO)(diag)-259, DTC P0500 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR “A”,
Diagnostic Procedure with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).>
3)... which will redirect us further to
Ref. to GD(H6DO)-185, DTC P0500 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR “A”, Diag-
nostic Trouble Code (DTC) Detecting Criteria.

4) and there we can see that it is about EITHER front abs sensor.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
talking about reading error codes WITHOUT anything:

or The FSM has this procedure in the Body Section, Instrument/Driver Information, Comination Meter System chapter.

---------------
abs sensors can be changed without dropping transmission :)
