Was quoted 2300 bucks to replace it and the shop really didn't seem interested in the work. Is this reasonably doable in the garage with enough time or are there some other hassles that I am not aware of. Seems like it is drop the rear axle, the exhaust and that is it?

Sounds like a royal pain but not life altering. In my case, the evap nipple rusted off about 3 years ago, I put a new barb in the small hole which relieved everything completely, and I put as much rustproof as I can get in there but I am sure this will be an issue eventually.

I also could have sworn someone mentioned a plastic gas tank being available.

Thoughts?

fsm also says to remove propeller shaft - would be good idea to work on rear bushings, adjust rear diff and balance propeller shaft :)))

well... let's check prices - 500-550 tank itself. so 1800 for labor?that would be like 18-10hour job(depends how much they charge for work)?! if they charge like 150 per hour - seems almost ok. if closer to 100 - overpriced. but, hey, everybody wants to drive mercedes :D

that I don't know.
It could outlast the vehicle so maybe I shouldn't worry too much...might be a while before I need to replace it anyways.
