I am hearing a 1/2 second grind on start up if the car has set 2 - 3 days or more. This is not the valve timing rattle.
This sounds maybe like the starter is beginning to fail, but it always starts.
Has anyone else experienced this noise or have an idea what it may be?

I am an experienced mechanic. I do all of my own repairs with full garage. It goes away if the car was started within 1 day and I keep forgetting to get under the car with a stethoscope prior to starting to see if it comes from the starter. I have always properly maintenance the vehicle it has 122,000 miles. I use Mobil On 5w20 oil.

Yes, this is common for most subarus as the age. The lube in the starter breaks down and the shaft doesn't retract fast enough. There is a 'how to' on legacygt.com on how to take apart and relube.
