I have a friend that is giving me an offer... I work on cars as a hobby... His Tribeca overheated this summer and is now missing on one cylinder with coolant leaking into the oil and visa versa. My daughter needs a car and she likes this one. So, would you think a cracked/warped head or bad head gasket?

Bad head gasket. WIth the timing chain, it's a lot of work to pull the cover to do the head gasket. Most weekend warriors would just get a good low mileage JDM engine and put it in. That's pretty fast. But less expensive to repair the headgasket if you want to put the time in.

You can, but you will regret it. Pulling a subaru engine is easier than most. I highly suggest it. Working on rounded/broken timing cover bolts (which almost certainly will happen) is very challenging in the engine compartment.

There is a good thread on here by someone that did replace their HG.
