Well I have Cablevision as our provider. I have one cable box and card on our main TV. We have two TV's upstairs. I want to buy a cable box for each room to avoid the monthly "rental" fee I get charged.

Does anyone know if extra cable cards are free from the provider? Would they even care if I had other TV's with the full cable access?

Thanks.

They are usually extra, but not as much as a cable box rental. They care because they can make money off of you.

Magic...we have Cablevision too, being not that far away from you. There are no "legal" resellers of the Scientific Atlanta cable boxes. They are only available through cable companies.

Also I think you are getting your terminology confused. A "cable card" is a newer device standard that allows you to eliminate the cable box altogether by inserting the "cable card" directly into a slot on your TV or PC cable tuner. The thin, little credit card sized thingy with the chip on it that inserts into the actual cable box is just a smart card with ID # to authorize your box to work on the Cablevision system. And no, they will not give you a smart card even if you can "obtain" a cable box b/c they want your rental money:tdown:

Check out www.broadbandreports.com (http://www.broadbandreports.com) They have forums specific to all the cable/telco companies which includes a OptimumOnline/Cablevision specific forum.
