brake light bulb question

I hope I'm not displaying my ignorance too much, but I was driving behind my wife the other night, and I noticed her passenger brake light was out... now the brake lights are on the lift gate, right? But when I looked closely to replace it, there is only one bulb in there... at least that's what it looks like. Does replacing the one bulb fix this? I don't know why it works as a regular light, but doesn't as a brake light... unless I AM losing it:eek:. Anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, buds...

A lot of rear bulbs actually have two lights in the bulb. If you look at the bulb you'll see two sets of filaments inside. I'm not an electrician so I might be calling it the wrong thing.

So a bulb can work as brake and not as tail light and visa versa.

wackojacko is exactly correct:) There are 2 filaments inside the single bulb...same sort of thing as headlights with standard and brights in one bulb.
