I just recently bought an '06 Tribeca. The engine sounds kind of like a diesel at startup in the morning. I though it was the thin break-in oil, so I switched to Mobil 1 10W30 with the same issue. Any thoughts on what this is? Are there hydraulic lifters or some other oil-pressure activated systems such as those for the variable cam timing/lift that might be causing the rattling noise for the first minute or so at cold start?
My '02 WRX never sounded so noisy at startup.
Thanks for any insight,
Eric

Which oil filter are you using?

I am currently using the Subaru filter. I don't have the part number handy, but it is a genuine Subaru part. I thought about drain back from the filter to the pan, but don't the Subaru filters have an anti-drain back valve?

My understanding is that they don't. I think I'm going to use a Wix filter.

My Tribeca is a little noisy at startup also. Sounds much different than other Sube's I've owned. Must be something about the H6 engine.

Chain drive for the timing cams is one thing.
