I was just thinking the other day what moments in Subaru's history helped define its success today. I can't speak to pre-1994, but the two things that I think propelled Subaru was the marketing campaign behind the Subaru Outback when it launched in 1996 with Crocodile Dundee as the spokesperson, who ever thought AWD station wagons could be cool again. The second thing is the Subaru Impreza and the WRC. Having that win with the late Colin McCrae in 1996 I believe really helped develop the brand. Even though Subaru hasn't been successful lately in WRC, the blue impreza is the car everyone thinks of when you mention WRC.

IF I were subaru, I would take the Tribeca and race it in Baja or Dakkar or one of those around the world Land Rover type events... it needs to have a personality and some heritage ie. the outback and the impreza.

Thoughts?

I don't disagree with you, but I don't really think you could race any sort of "crossover" SUV type vehicle in Baja or Dakkar type races. The unibody probably wouldn't be able to handle that kind of abuse given the weight of the vehicle even with a full roll cage.

And going pre-1994, the introduction of the Legacy in 1990 was probably the going mainstream point for Subaru. The GL/Loyale wagons were decent sellers before that in the NE and snowy areas of the US, but other than those areas, not so much. My parents bought our GL-10 wagon way back in 1986...it was a sweet ride for the time although AWD wasn't standard yet (ours was FWD).

Thanks for the pre-96 history. You're probably right about the weight.. I was thinking about the Impreza being a uni-body but it weighs about 1000lbs less.
The Tribeca is in a very tough and competitve category, it needs something to differentiate itself, much like the Impreza and Outback. Maybe a mini movie(s), much lke BMW did.
